I completed my Fellowship with the Key Biscayne Community Foundation (KBCF), a local nonprofit dedicated to empowering residents to enhance the quality of life in the Key Biscayne and greater Miami communities through diverse and impactful programs. The KBCF oversees various projects, including youth enrichment in underserved communities, programs for children with special needs, and environmental sustainability initiatives. This summer, the foundation had a pressing need for support with the Citizen Scientist Project (CSP), a program for residents to monitor and protect the natural resources of Key Biscayne and Virginia Key, two barrier islands in Miami, Florida.

The KBCF is a lifeline for Key Biscayne and the greater Miami area, sponsoring programs for local residents and partnering with organizations in marginalized communities that need support and resources. When I first learned about the Brodhead Fellowship, I immediately thought of the KBCF due to my prior involvement with them and their successful track record. The KBCF addresses community needs and fosters positive change through close monitoring of local issues, opportunities, and resources. They have an in-depth understanding of the region’s challenges and work with various organizations to address them. Together with volunteers, KBCF spearheads initiatives that positively impact every community member and extend support to those in need throughout the Miami area.

Working with KBCF this summer gave me the chance to be part of initiatives that have real-world impact. This deeply resonated with me as it aligned with my passion for environmental sustainability and community engagement. The opportunities for co-education were immense, as I learned from the foundation’s experienced staff and volunteers while contributing my own knowledge and skills to their projects. This asset-based, community-focused partnership was a humble and reflective journey, allowing me to grow both personally and professionally while making a meaningful difference in the community.

GOALS

During my BSP Fellowship, I dove into environmental sustainability and public health by working on real-world data analysis and strategy projects. Most of my time was dedicated to leading the #PlasticFreeKB initiative, where I managed my own interns and met with business owners to set up and run meetings. I also reviewed the outcomes of the 2023-2024 partnership between KBCF/CSP, the Everglades Foundation, and the Miami Waterkeeper, and set goals for their 2024-2025 partnerships. Additionally, I gathered and organized data on Key Challenge participants and projects from the past decade, and developed the theme and materials for Key Challenge 2024-2025. Moreover, I helped create a sustainable business model for A Zero Waste Culture's KB Community Compost and revamped the Citizen Scientist newsletter. This hands-on experience boosted my skills and helped me grow both professionally and personally. At Duke, I hope to apply what I learned from DukeEngage and BSP to continue supporting and leading sustainability efforts on campus and beyond.
