PATH TO THE BRODHEAD SERVICE PROGRAM
My journey to the Brodhead Service Program (BSP) was shaped by my experiences, academic interests, and a desire to impact my community positively. Growing up in Miami, I felt connected to my community and wanted to contribute to its well-being. My DukeEngage Gateway program experience, where I helped establish a social interaction program for autistic adults, solidified my passion for community service.

My academic pursuits in environmental engineering and sustainability motivated me to apply my skills to real-world problems. The BSP, partnered with the Key Biscayne Community Foundation (KBCF), offered the perfect opportunity.

I believe civic engagement is essential for fostering belonging, social cohesion, and positive change. My DukeEngage experience reinforced my belief in actively working towards solutions that benefit all. Participating in BSP allowed me to engage meaningfully with my community, addressing critical environmental and social issues. This summer reaffirmed my commitment to civic engagement and provided valuable experiences for my academic and professional future.

ABOUT ME
Hi! My name is Alessandra Peña, and I am a rising sophomore at Duke University from Miami, FL majoring in Mechanical Engineering and considering a master’s degree in Climate and Sustainability Engineering. Beyond my academic endeavors, I am an active member of various campus organizations. As a proud member of the Dancing Devils (Duke's Official Dance Team), I have the privilege of showcasing my school spirit through dance at the football and basketball games, igniting excitement and camaraderie among fellow students. I am also a member of the Society of Women Engineers, helping to empower women to achieve our full potential as engineers and leaders. As an active member of the Duke Motorsports Chassis Team, I am able to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom and its practical application in real-world scenarios. I am also an Orientation Leader as part of Duke's Project BUILD, a program intended to engage first-years in service and community-building within the Duke and Durham communities. Driven by a desire to make a meaningful impact in my field and beyond, I am committed to leveraging my academic and extracurricular experiences to contribute positively to society.
